WAILUKU, Maui — Protesters plan to again gather near Central Maui Baseyard in hopes of stopping construction materials for a telescope atop Haleakala from making it to their destination.
The gathering was announced after officials last week said they would again try to deliver equipment for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, The Maui News reported (https://bit.ly/1SMneSI ).
“We will continue to stand in protection of Haleakala,” organizers said in a news release. “We gather once more to stop the second attempt at a delivery meant for the DKIST construction site atop Haleakala.”
Maui County officials say they respect the protesters right to demonstrate, but if they do something illegal — such as block the road — they will be taken into custody.
A wide-load convoy full of materials was postponed June 24 when groups blocked the road with an overnight candlelight vigil.
The group says they’re gathering to pray, sing and chant.
“Construction continues as if everything has been done legally and with full consultation and blessing of our community, though we still await judgment on a lawsuit currently in the Hawaii state Supreme Court,” the statement from organizers said.
